The book that I am currently reading is called 'Into the wild', by Jon Krakauer. I'm about halfway through so far and it is an interesting read. However; the author has a tendency to get off topic and go on about something that is either extremely boring or unrelated to the story. This is probably the biggest flaw in the story that I've seen thus far. The book is more documentary than story, the type you would see on discovery channel, it tells of a man named Christopher J. McCandless who, shortly after graduating from university, dropped all ties with his family, changed his name, disposed of his money and embarked on a personal Odyssey. Chris, who changes his name to Alexander Supertramp, is an avid fan of classic adventure novels, specifically Jack London titles, and his dream is to venture to Alaska and live amongst the wild. The author opens with a showcase of how Alex's body was found, inside an abandoned bus which served as a shelter for hunters, and then goes back to document his adventure from the beginning. It is interesting to know his final fate while you are hearing about his travels, but after the story reaches the point where Alex ventures north toward Alaska, the author changes pace and starts discussing other men who have disappeared or died while trying to live off the land, or others who were dreamers like Alex. While this is an attempt to explain Alex's motivation and mindset in going into the bush, it ends up being nothing more then a page-filler which takes away from my enjoyment of the book and doesn't give any pertinent information; at least in my opinion.
All in all, I think this was a great story for the author to document, however I don't think it should have been made into a full novel, it is short as-is and I am discovering that a lot of the pages are simply filling.

An excellent entry, Curtis. Have you read any other books by Krakauer? His novels tend to document real people and situations. He wrote one about climbing Everest (which he really did). He also recently published one about the Mormon faith which got him into a lot of trouble. Come to think of, the novel about Everest also got him in to a bit of trouble.
Mark: ten out of ten
